People sometimes suggest putting salt on a slug to kill it. why would the salt hurt the slug

Because the slug is protected by enzyme like proteins surrounding the body, connecting it to the nerve system, since salt has sodium, the slat is used to desentegrate that nerve system, then eventually destroying the body.
