The distance D, travelled is;


\text{Distance}=speed* gallon

Where;


\begin{gathered} \text{Speed}=22\text{mpg} \\ \text{Distance}=1,684\text{mile} \\ \text{gallon}=(1684)/(22) \\ \text{gallon}=76.55 \end{gathered}

The total gas that would be used for the trip is 76.55gallon.

But, the cost of gas is about $3.42 per gallon.

Hence, the approximate driving cost of the trip would be;
