Ecological succession is the colonization of an area where there wasn't a biological community. The difference between primary and secondary succession, is that in the primary succession, the area has never been colonized before, as for example in an area that is discovered due to a lowering in the water level; while in the secondary succession, the colonization occurs after a disturb in the area, for example, after a fire.
