If a writer uses a negative tone, they might not agree or like that view. Here's an example...

1. I smelled a stench in the museum.

2. I smelled an aroma in the museum.

Aroma and stench are the same word, yet the first one seems more in a negative tone since stench has a negative connotation. Aroma has a positive connotation, so it seems more positive than the first sentence.
