We know that there were 13 M&Ms in total.

r+b=13

Where r represents red M&Ms, and b represents brown M&Ms.

"There was one more red M&M than brown M&M", we can express this as

r=b+1

Then, we combine the equations we've got to solve for b

\begin{gathered} r+b=13 \\ b+1+b=13 \\ 2b=13-1 \\ 2b=12 \\ b=(12)/(2) \\ b=6 \end{gathered}

Then, we find r

r=6+1=7

Hence, there were 6 brown M&Ms and 7 red M&Ms.
