Given

f\mleft(x\mright)=2x-3
g\mleft(x\mright)=-5x+2

Find

f\mleft(3\mright)+g\mleft(8\mright)

First we substitute x=3 into f(x):

\begin{gathered} f\mleft(3\mright)=2*3-3=6-3=3 \\ f\mleft(3\mright)=3 \end{gathered}

Now find g(8):

g\mleft(8\mright)=-5*8+2=-40+2=-38

Now find

\begin{gathered} f\mleft(3\mright)+g\mleft(8\mright)=3-38=-35 \\ f\mleft(3\mright)+g\mleft(8\mright)=-35 \end{gathered}

f(3) + g(8) = -35
