The function for is:

y=f(x)

A function is a process or a relation that associates each element x to a single element y. x is the independent variable and y is the dependent variable. Normally if you write a function, you isolate the dependent variable.

x=4y+3

This function is not in function form, as you can see the dependent variable y isn't isolated. A correct way would be:

y=(x-3)/(4)
