A closed, adjustable cylinder containing 6.2 moles of oxygen gas has a volume of 8.4 liters and a pressure of 5.0 atmospheres. If the cylinder's volume is changed so that it is 14.3 liters, what is the new pressure of the gas? Round your answer to the nearest 0.01 atm.

answer and explanation

to determine the new pressure we can use Boyle's Law which states that

P1V1 = P2V2

P1 = 5.0atm

V1 = 8.4LP2?

V2 = 14.3L

P2 = P1V2/V1

= (5.0 x 14.3) / 8.4

= 8.51 atm
