There is a property called "Distributive property" which states that:

\begin{gathered} a(b+c)=ab+ac \\ a(b-c)=ab-ac \end{gathered}

You can notice that terms inside the parentheses must be multiplicated by the value located outside the parentheses.

In this case, you have the following expression:

3\mleft(x-4\mright)

So you need to multiply the terms inside the parentheses by 3, in order to simplify the expression using the Distributive property. You get that this is:

3\mleft(x-4\mright)=(3)(x)-(3)(4)=3x-12
