Consider the surface area of the cube is 294 square cm.

Let a be the side length of the cube.

The formula for the surface area of the cube is

A=6a^2

Substitute A=294, we get

294=6a^2

Dividing both sides by 6, we get

(294)/(6)=(6a^2)/(6)
49=a^2
7^2=a^2
a=7cm

Hence the side length of the cube is 7cm.
