When a submarine dives to a depth of 5.0 × 10^2 m, how much pressure, in pa, must its hull be able to withstand? how many times larger is this pressure than the pressure at the surface?

Depth (h) = 5.0 × 10^2 m

Density of water (p) = 1030 kg /m^3

gravity (g)= 9.8 m/s^2

P = p g h

P = 1030 x 9.8 x 500 = 5 x 10^6 Pa

P/Patm = 5 x 10^6 Pa / 1.013 x 10^5 Pa = 49 times larger
