fourteen less than five times a number is 61

x = 17

Explanation:

(my explanation is probably not that good)

14- 5 * x = 61

To find x, I times numbers by five until I reach 60 or something close.

5 * 12 = 45

5 * 15 = 60

Now that I have reached sixty I need to find out how much more I need to add to find 14-

15 + 60 = 85

85 - 14 = 61

So we need to times 5 by 3 + 15 to equal 85.

15 + 3 = 17

17 * 5 = 85.

If we plug that into the original question we get:

14 - 5 * 17 = 61

14 - 85 = 61

61 = 61
