The total angle of a triangle is equals to 180 degree's. From the diagram below the sum of the angle 3 and the interior angle between 1 and 2 is equals to the exterior angle closer to 4 . In other words the two angles that add up to form the exterior angle must combine with the third angle (angle 4 in our case) to form 180 degrees.
