Notice that

(6)/(8)=(2)/(2)\cdot(3)/(4)=(3)/(4)

Then, the lowest common denominator between 4 and 12 is 12.

Thus,

\begin{gathered} (3)/(4)=(3)/(3)\cdot(3)/(4)=(9)/(12) \\ (1)/(12) \\ \Rightarrow(9)/(12)+(1)/(12)=(10)/(12)=(2)/(2)\cdot(5)/(6)=(5)/(6) \end{gathered}

However, if you are not allowed to simplify, notice that 8*3=24, 12*2=24; therefore, the lowest common denominator is 24, then

\begin{gathered} (6)/(8)=(18)/(24) \\ (1)/(12)=(2)/(24) \\ \Rightarrow(18)/(24)+(2)/(24)=(20)/(24) \\ \Rightarrow(20)/(24)=(5)/(6) \end{gathered}
