Solution

Population of the town = 3000

Rate = 4%

Amount = 4700

A=P(1+r)^n
\begin{gathered} 4700=3000(1+4\text{ \%\rparen}^n \\ (4700)/(3000)=1+0.04)^n \\ 1.567=1.04^n \end{gathered}

Find log of both side

\begin{gathered} 1.567=1.04^n \\ ln1.567=ln1.04^n \\ nln1.04=1.567 \\ n=(ln1.567)/(ln1.04) \\ n=11.5yrs \end{gathered}

Therefore the number of years it will take population to reach 4700 = 11.5yrs
