\begin{gathered} \text{solving system of equations means we are to solve equations } \\ \text{simultaneously} \\ \text{lets take an example, to help us understand this better} \\ \text{given the quations: x + y =8 and 2x - y = 7} \\ we\text{ are to solve the equation simultaneously} \\ To\text{ solve this, }we\text{ can either apply elimination method,} \\ \text{substitution method or graphical method.} \\ \text{applying elimination method},\text{ we have} \\ x\text{ + y = 8 --------- (1)} \\ 2x\text{ - y = 7 ---------(2)} \\ \text{adding the two equations, we get } \\ 3x\text{ = 15} \\ \text{divide both sides by 3} \\ x\text{ = 5} \\ \text{next we n}eed\text{ to get the value of y} \\ \text{substitute x = 5 into equation 1} \\ x\text{ + y = 8, implies } \\ 5\text{ + y = 8} \\ y\text{ = 8 - 5} \\ y\text{ = 3} \end{gathered}

therefore for the equations x + y = 8 and 2x - y = 7.

the solution is x = 5 and y 3
