Solution:

Consider the graph;

(a) The total area of the square is;

\begin{gathered} A_(square)=l^2 \\ \\ l=12units \\ \\ A_(square)=12^2 \\ \\ A_(square)=144 \end{gathered}

ANSWER: The total area of the square is 144 square units.

(b) The area of the shaded region is;

\begin{gathered} A_(shaded)=(1)/(2)bh \\ \\ b=base\text{ }length,h=height\text{ of the shaded region.} \\ \\ A_(shaded)=(1)/(2)(11)(8) \\ \\ A_(shaded)=44 \end{gathered}

ANSWER: The area of the shaded region is 44 square units.

(c) The ratio that would be in the shaded area is;

\begin{gathered} (A_(shaded))/(A_(square))=(44)/(144) \\ \\ (A_(shaded))/(A_(square))=(11)/(36) \end{gathered}

ANSWER: The answer is 11:36
