Mean: a number or quantity having a value intermediate with the given data. It can be calculated as follows:

Mean=\frac{sum\text{ of }all\text{ data points}}{Number\text{ of data points}}=(\Sigma x)/(n)

In our case:

\text{Mean}=(14+13+11+16+8+15+5+11)/(8)
Mean=(93)/(8)
Mean=11.6lb

Median: value separating the lower half from the higher half. To calculate this parameter we have to order our data from the lowest to the highest value.

5,8,11,11,13,14,15,16

In this case, as there are an even pair of numbers, the middle value is 11 and 13. Thus, we have to calculate the average of these:

(11+13)/(2)=(24)/(2)=12

Therefore, the median is 12lbs.

Answer:

• Mean: 11.6lb

,

• Median: 12lb
