Of the shirts in Shelley's dresser, 1/3 are striped, while another 5/12 are plaid. What fraction of the shirts are either striped or plaid?

9/12.
Since 12 is a multiple of 3, we can multiply the 3 by 4. Now what you do to the denominator you must do to the Numerator. 1 x 4 = 4
So 5/12 + 4/12 is 9/12
9/12 of the shirts are either striped or plaid
