Solution:

Michael wants to put new hardwood floors in his kitchen and dining room areas.

Given;

The side lengths of the kitchen and dining room are as follows

\begin{gathered} For\text{ the kitchen;} \\ l=11\text{ ft} \\ w=\text{ 10 ft} \\ For\text{ the dining;} \\ l=15\text{ ft} \\ w=12\text{ ft} \end{gathered}

To find the area, A, of the rooms, we will apply the formula to find the area, A, of a rectangle

The formula is

A=lw

For the area of the kitchen

A=lw=11*10=110\text{ ft}^2

For the area of the dining

A=lw=15*12=180\text{ ft}^2

The square feet of hardwood he needs in order to cover both rooms will be

\begin{gathered} =Area\text{ of the kitchen}+Area\text{ of the dining} \\ =110+180=290\text{ ft}^2 \end{gathered}

Hence, the answer is 290 ft²
