Answer: The number is: " 55 ".

Explanation:

Note that we are asked to find a particular number; which we shall use the variable: x ;

If 15 is added to (unknown number), the result is:
40 less than twice (two times) the (unknown number).

Find (the number).

_____
So, if 15 is added to x ;

(i.e. x + 15 ; the result is (i.e. equals) ;

→ 40 less than 2*x ;

or: → 2x − 40 .

_____
So write the equation; and solve for x ; which is the answer:
→ x + 15 = 2x − 40 ;

2x − 40 = x + 15 ;

Subtract x from Each Side of the equation; & add 40 to Each Side of the equation:
_____
2x − 40 = x + 15 ;

- x + 40 = - x + 40 ;
