A shirt's original cost is $40

If a discount of 25% is taken of the original cost,

The discount will be,

\begin{gathered} 25\text{\% discount = }(25)/(100)*40=\text{\$10} \\ \text{Discount taken off is \$10} \end{gathered}

The cost of the shirt after the discount will be,

\text{Cost after 25\% discount = \$40 - \$10 = \$30}

Hence, the cost of the shirt after the discount is $30
