let x be the number of children in the class , then

number of boys =
(1)/(4) x , so

x =
(1)/(4) x + 18 ( multiply through by 4 to clear the fraction )

4x = x + 72 ( subtract x from both sides )

3x = 72 ( divide both sides by 3 )

x = 24

There are 24 children in the class
