Cathy needs 8 12 yards of fabric to make a quilt. She has one piece of fabric that is 3 12 yards and another piece of fabric that is 2 /4 yards. How many more yards of fabric does Cathy need to make the quilt? *

If she has 3/12 yards and 2/4 yards on another piece of fabric, the total quantity of fabric is the sum of both of them:

(3)/(12)\text{ + }(2)/(4)\text{ = }\frac{3\text{ + 6}}{12}\text{ = }(9)/(12)

It means that she already has enough fabric to make a quilt, because she has more than 8/12 yards
