The area of the shaded region will be the area of the square minus the area of the circle, therefore:

The area of the circle is:

\begin{gathered} A_c=\pi r^2 \\ where\colon \\ r=(4)/(2)=2 \\ so\colon \\ A_c=\pi(2^2^{}) \\ A_c=4\pi \end{gathered}

The area of the square is:

\begin{gathered} A_s=l^2 \\ where\colon \\ l=4 \\ A_s=4^2 \\ A_s=16 \end{gathered}

Therefore:

\begin{gathered} A=A_s-A_c \\ A=16-4\pi \\ A\approx3.44cm^2 \end{gathered}
