Why does soggy soil harm the survival of plants and animals that live in it, such as earthworms?

-Few garden plants will survive waterlogging or flooding.

-Prolonged periods of sitting in soil saturated with water reduces the oxygen available to the roots and causes yellow leaves, root rot and death.

-Because earthworms breathe through their skin, it must be kept moist in order to work. Generally, however, they vacate wet soil, preferring soil that is only moist. This is again because prolonged periods of time in soil satured with water promotes lack of oxygen.
