If we already know one variable, then we can replace this value with one equation:

Let us choose the first equation:


2x+y=5

Replace using x=3:


2(3)+y=5

Solve for y:


\begin{gathered} 6+y=5 \\ y=5-6 \\ y=-1 \end{gathered}

Hence, the value of y is -1.
