The perimeter of the parallelogram is P=40m

Its length is w= x - 8m

l=x

The perimeter of a parelalogram can be calculated as the sum of all its sides, or:

P=2(l+w)

Since its opposite sides are congruent.

Replace the formula with the expressions for the width and lenght to determine an equation. Then from this equation you can clear the value of x

\begin{gathered} P=2(l+w)=2l+2w \\ 40=2x+2(x-8) \\ 40=2x+2x-16 \\ 4x=56 \\ x=14 \end{gathered}

The length is l=x= 14m

The width is w=x-8=14-8= 6m
