The left side has 1 apple and 1 orange 0.45

the right side has 1 banana (0.25) and two strawberrys for 0.60

The right side cost is

0.25 + 0.60 = 0.85

The left side is apple + 0.45

So let cost of apple be "a", so we have the equation:

\begin{gathered} a+0.45=0.85 \\ a=0.85-0.45 \\ a=0.40 \end{gathered}

The apple costs $0.40
