Rate of change

We want to know what is the rate change of Pete's height per year.

We find the difference of height from year 3 to year 5.

Year 3: 37 in

Year 5: 45 in

the difference of height is

45 in - 37 in = 8 in

His height changed 8 in in two years, since we want to know the change each year we divide this quatity by two:

\frac{8\text{ in}}{2\text{ years}}=\frac{4in}{\text{year}}

Answer: rate of change 4 in/year
