In arithmetic, the additive identity is equivalent to 0, then when we say that x is the additive identity what we are saying that the value of x is 0, since y = 5, when we replace 0 for x and 5 for y, we get:

x + y = 0 + 5 = 5

Then the value of x + y is 5
