By definition:


\cos (angle)=\frac{\text{adjacent side}}{Hypotenuse}

From the picture:


\begin{gathered} \cos (60)=(x)/(20) \\ (1)/(2)=(x)/(20) \\ (1)/(2)\cdot20=x \\ 10=x \end{gathered}
