The area of the garden is

2(5.5x+3.5)

and the combined area is:

2.5(8x+5)

To find the area of the walkway we substract the area of the garden to the combined area, that is:

\begin{gathered} 2.5(8x+5)-2(5.5x+3.5)=20x+12.5-11x-7 \\ =9x+5.5 \end{gathered}

Therefore the area of the walkway is:

9x+5.5
