Answer:

Median: stays the same

Mean: decreases.

Step-by-step explanation:

The median of a data sample is the middle number when the data is ordered from least to greatest.

Now before 409 is replaced by 274, the median of the data is

177,252,283,298,\boxed{317},318,348,397,409

After we replace 409 with 274, the data becomes

177,252,283,298,317,318,348,397,274

the median is still the same:

177,252,283,298, \boxed{317}, 318,348,397,274

Part B.

The mean is defined as the average of the data.

Therefore, to find the mean of our sample data, we'd sum all numbers and divide by 9 ( since there are 9 numbers in total).

Average=(177+252+283+298+317+318+348+397+409)/(9)

Now, the average is affected by all numbers in the data set, especially the outliers.

Therefore, if we replace the bigger number 409 by a smaller number "40"
