A chef plans to mix 100 % vinegar with Italian dressing. The Italian dressing contains 13 percent vinegar. The chef wants to make 150 millimeters of a mixture that contains 42 percent vinegar. How much vinegar and how much Italian dressing should she use

Solution:

Let v = ml of 100% vinegar

Then 150-v = ml of dressing

thus, we have:

v + 0.13(150-v) = 0.42(150)

this is equivalent to:

v + 19.5 - 0.13 v = 63

this is equivalent to:

v - 0.13 v = 63 - 19.5

this is equivalent to:

0.87 v = 43.5

solving for v , we obtain:
