Water is called the "universal solvent" because it is capable of dissolving more substances than any other liquid. This is important to every living thing on earth. It means that wherever water goes, either through the air, the ground, or through our bodies, it takes along valuable chemicals, minerals, and nutrients.

The body water has an important role as a thermoregulator, regulating the overall body temperature by helping dissipate heat.

A primary function of water is to serve as a lubricant. For example, it is found in saliva and is a substantial component in the fluid surrounding joints. The water layer helps protect and cushion these vulnerable areas from shock and trauma that could otherwise cause significant damage.
