S={-6,8}

1) Let's solve this quadratic equation

y = x² - 2x - 48 Turn that into an equation

x²-2x -48 =0 Factoring since a =1

2) Which are those two numbers whose sum is equal to -2 and their product is -48?

-8 +6 = -2

-8 x 6 = -48

x²-2x -48 =0

(x-8)(x+6)=0

Solving each factor, we have the roots:

x -8 =0 ⇒ x = 8

x +6 = 0 ⇒ x = -6

3) Hence, the roots of this quadratic equation is

S={-6,8}
