Let´s the following line:

\text{ y-2 = 3(x-1)}

This is equivalent to say:

\text{ y-2 = 3x-3}

resolve for y:

\text{ y = 3x-}3\text{ +2 = 3x -1}

So we have the following equation for the line

\text{ y = 3x -1}

then we can conclude that the slope is 3.
