How do you graph y=1/3×+2

To graph y=1/3x+2, you would first plot the y-intercept at (0,2). Then, using the slope of 1/3, you would count up 1 and over 3 to find the next point. This process is repeated until you have graphed several points. You then connect these points with a line to complete the graph.

Ex:

If we were to start at (0,2), we would go up 1 and over 3 to find our next point which would be at approximately (1,2.33). We continue this pattern until we reach our final destination of around (-3,-4)

To graph a linear function as the given you need to find the coordinates (x,y) of two points.

To find the coordinates (x,y) of a function you choose a value for one of the variables (x or y) and find the value of the other variable, as follow:

y=(1)/(3)x+2

When x= 1

You substitute the x in the equation of the function by 1:

y=(1)/(3)(1)+2

Calculate the value of y when x=1:

y=(1)/(3)+2=(1+6)/(3)=(7)/(3)\approx2.33

You can identify the coordinates of one point as (1, 7/3)

When y=3

You substitute the y in the equation of the function by 3

3=(1)/(3)x+2

You clear the x to find its value:

\begin{gathered} 3-2=(1)/(3)x \\ 1=(1)/(3)x \\ 3\cdot1=x \\ 3=x \end{gathered}

You can identify the coordinates of other point as (3 , 3)

-----------------------------------------

Whit the coordinates of two points you graph the function:

1. Put the points in a plano x y:

2. Draw a line that go through the points:

Then, the graph above is the function y=1/3x+2
