We are asked to compare numbers that are given in scientific notation (with base 10 exponents)

We are told that the diameter of Jupiter is 9 times 10^4 miles, and that the diameter of the Earth is 8 times 10^3 miles

so we have to divide the two values, and use the rules for division of powers with the same base to simplify the answer as shown below:

(J)/(E)=(9\cdot10^4)/(8\cdot10^3)=(9)/(8)\cdot10\approx1.125\cdot10=11.25

In the expressionabove we divided the diameter of Jupiter by the diameter of Earth, and cancelled in pairs three common factors of "10" in numerator and denominator ending with just one factor of 10 in the numerator. The quotient of the vales 9 divided by 8 gives close to 1.125, so multiplied by 10 this renders 11.25

Therefore, we select the answer that reads: "11".
