Two customers at a pop-up clothing sale purchased tank-tops and skirts. The price of each tank-top is the same and the price of each skirt is the same. The first customer paid $83.00 for 4 tank-tops and 2 skirts. The second customer paid $89.50 for 6 tank-tops and 1 skirt. What was the price in dollars of each skirt?

Step 1

Represent price of tank-top = m and that of skirt = n

Step 2

Write two system of equations

4m + 2n = 83

6m + n = 89.5

Step 3

Solving the two system of equations using substitution method

From equation 2, make n subject of relation.

6m + n = 89.5

n = 89.5 - 6m

Step 4

Substitute n in equation 1

4m + 2(89.5 - 6m) = 83

4m + 179 - 12m = 83

collect like terms

12m - 4m = 179 - 83

8m = 96

m = 96/8 = $12

n = 89.5 - 6(12)

n = 89.5 - 72

n = $17.5

Price in dollars for ach skirt = $17.5

12m + 4m = 179 + 83

16m = 262

m = 262/16

m = $16.375

n = 89.5 -6(16.375)

= 89.5 -
