The z score tells us how many standard deviations that a given score is from the mean. A negative z score would place a score on the left of the mean while a positive z score would place a score on the right of the mean.

Given that

x = 5

z = - 11,

This tells you that x = 5 is 1.1 standard deviations to the left of the mean

If the z score is negative, the value of x is to the the left of the mean
