5 inches is added to each side of the kite and the perimeter of the kite is now 56 inches.

Perimeter of a figure is the sum of all the exterior sides of that figure.

For this kite, it's perimeter will be

4 (x + 5) = 56

4x + 20 = 56

4x = 56 - 20

4x = 36

Divide both sides by 4

(4x/4) = (36/4)

x = 9 inches.
