Given: A graph showing the relationship between the number of hours traveled and the distance traveled as seen in the figure

To Determine: The miles traveled in 7 hours

Solution:

Step 1: Determine the slope of the line

let us pick two points, the starting point and the terminating point

From the graph, coordinate of the starting point is (0,0), and coordinate of the terminating point is (4, 280)

If the distance traveled in 7hours is x, the coordinate of the point would be (7,x)

The formula for finding the slope of two given points is

\begin{gathered} A\left(x_1,y_1\right) \\ B\left(x_2,y_2\right) \\ slope\left(s\right)=(y_2-y_1)/(x_2-x_1) \end{gathered}
\begin{gathered} \lparen0,0),and,\left(4,280\right) \\ s=(280-0)/(4-0) \\ s=(280)/(4) \\ s=70miles\text{ per hour} \end{gathered}

Please note that the distance traveled axis is given in tens of miles

Step 2: Determine the value of x

Taking two points, the terminating point and the coordinate of the distance traveled in 7 hours, use the sloe to find x as shown below

\begin{gathered} \left(4,280\right?,and,\left(7,x\right? \\ s=(x-280)/(7-4)=70 \\ (x-280)/(3)=70 \\ x-280=3*70 \\ x-280=210 \\ x=210+280 \\ x=490miles \end{gathered}

Hence, the miles traveled in 7 hours is 490 miles, OPTION C
