Solving by elimination method.

We have the following system of equations:

$\begin{gathered} 5x-y=2 \\ -9x+y=-10 \end{gathered}$

If we add both equations, we have

because -y+y=0. That is, we have eliminated y.

Now, by combining similar terms, we obtain

If we move -4 to the right hand side, we have

$\begin{gathered} x=(-8)/(-4) \\ x=2 \end{gathered}$

Now, we can substitute this value into the first equation. It yields

$\begin{gathered} 5(2)-y=2 \\ 10-y=2 \end{gathered}$
