platinum has a density of 21.4 grams per cubic centimeter. A bar of platinum has a mass of about 1000 grams. It has a width of 51 millimeters and a height of 9.7 millimeters. Find the length of the bar to the nearest millimeter.

step 1

Find out the volume

Remember that the formula of density is equal to

D=m/V

where

m is the mass and V is the volume

substitute the given values

21.4=1,000/V

solve for V

V=1,000/21.4

V=47.73 cm3

step 2

We have that

The volume of the bar is equal to

V=L*W*H

we have

V=47.73 cm3

W=51 mm=5.1 cm

H=9.7 mm=0.97 cm

substitute

47.73=L*(5.1*0.97)

L=9.648 cm

convert to mm

L=96.48 mm

round

L=96 mm
