To determine how many quarts of water did Jose and Julio drink altogether, you have to add both fractions:

(11)/(12)+(2)/(3)

To be able to add fractions, they must be expressed using the same denominator, so the first step is to find a common denominator between both fractions.

The common denominator between "12" and "3" is 12, to express 2/3 as its corresponding fraction with denominator 12, you have to multiply the numerator and denominator by 4:

\begin{gathered} (11)/(12)+(2)/(3) \\ (11)/(12)+(2\cdot4)/(3\cdot4) \\ (11)/(12)+(8)/(12) \end{gathered}

Now that both fractions are expressed using the same denominator you can add them:

(11)/(12)+(8)/(12)=(11+8)/(12)=(19)/(12)

They drank 19/12 quarts of water altogether.
