Dale and Sharon Mahnke have decided to fence off the garden plot behind their house, using their house as a "fence" along one side of a garden. The length (which runs parallel to the house) is 4 feet less than twice the width. Find the dimensions if 32 feet of fencing is used along the three sides requiring it.-ntsail

ANSWER:

9 ft, 9 ft, 14 ft

Explanation:

Given:

Width = x

Length = 2x - 4

For the perimeter in this case it would be given by 2 times the width and once the length.

Therefore, we can establish the following equation:

2x+(2x-4)=32

We solve for x:

\begin{gathered} 4x=32+4 \\ x=(36)/(4) \\ x=9 \\ w=x=9\text{ ft} \\ \\ \text{ For the length,} \\ l=2\cdot9-4=18-4=14\text{ ft} \end{gathered}

Dimensions would be two 9 ft sides (width) and one 14 ft side (length)
