To complete the perfect square ((x-h)²) we add and subtract constants:

\begin{gathered} y=x^(2)-10x+16 \\ y=x^(2)-10x+25-25+16 \\ y=x^(2)-10x+5^(2)-9 \\ y=(x-5)^(2)-9 \end{gathered}
