it indicates how many units y changes, when x changes a certain amount of units when going from one point to another.

we only need to look at 2 points.

to go from (0, 4) to (4, -3)

x changes by +4 (from 0 to 4),

y changes by -7 (from 4 to -3).

so the rate of change is -7/3
